Job purpose
A PSV Company Bus Driver is responsible for driving a passenger‑caring vehicle (PCV) and providing good customer service and a safe, comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS buses.
About the Role

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Wear high‑visibility PPE in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Conduct pre‑service vehicle checks: safety walk‑round, report defects, complete Vehicle Defect Card or enter defect electronically.
- Keep the vehicle clean, tidy and in compliance with company regulations regarding mobile phone use, smoking, and prohibited equipment.
- Attend safety briefings and training; report safety accidents/incidents using the company reporting procedure.
- Understand emergency and evacuation plans; keep the bus cab area safe and tidy.
- Provide high‑standard customer service: greet passengers, give information on road closures/diversions, assist passengers with additional needs.
- Maintain professional conduct, behaving friendly and professional towards customers and colleagues.
- Drive legally, safely and professionally, meeting timetable without running early or late when it is safe.
- Stay informed of road closures, diversions or events affecting service via notices, briefings and supervisor instructions.
- Maintain a valid driving licence and CPC licence; available for inspection at all times.
- Report absences, incidents, and safety/security concerns to the line manager promptly.
- Participate in yearly appraisals and provide feedback to line manager.
- Adhere to all HATS policies and procedures and undertake any reasonable request made by the company.
Work Environment and Licensing
- Licence: D1 category with no restrictions, CPC licence valid for vehicle type.
- Medical renewals up to date per licence requirements.
- Inform line manager of any changes that may affect entitlement to drive (e.g., illness, injury, conviction).
- Licence available for inspection every 6 months.
- Maintain correct clothing and equipment; never report for work when overtired or under influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Report absence procedures are followed.
Working Hours
Flexible hours with core hours 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30; additional work as required. Work is primarily outdoor, on vehicles, in all weather, traffic and road conditions.
Required Criteria
- Valid current UK (or acceptable other) driving licence.
- No greater than 6 penalty points.
- Good understanding of written and spoken English.
- Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
- Suitable references available.
- Professional driving experience.
- Received 7 hours of DCPC training each year.
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
- Prepared to undertake NVQ training if required.
- Ability to drive to a competent and safe standard.
- Good written and verbal communication skills (ESOL entry level 2).
- Valid CPC Driver qualification Card.
- Valid Driver Card (Tacho Card).
