Job Description

You will be supporting the delivery of Maths and English, vocational qualifications, and enrichment elements to help students prepare for independence and work experience. You are expected to work collaboratively and flexibly, with specific accountabilities including:

  • Supporting the tutor to deliver English, Maths, and ICT Functional Skills, GCSE resits, and a vocational subject (currently BTEC Work Skills) over four teaching days.
  • Supporting the Placement and Progression Officer to plan and deliver employability workshops, guest speakers, and enrichment activities.
  • Providing one‑to‑one and small group support to learners, showing empathy, respect, and patience.
  • Contributing to regular student reviews to build self‑belief and confidence.
  • Assisting the tutor in addressing poor behaviour appropriately.
  • Promoting a culture of expectation and aspiration at the school.

Qualifications

  • A Teaching Assistant qualification at Level 2 or above, or a commitment to obtaining this qualification.
  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths, or a commitment to obtaining them.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • High expectations for pupils’ behaviour and clear strategies for working with challenging pupils.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage children appropriately.
  • Experience teaching children with EAL, SEN, speech and language difficulties, and other complex needs.
  • Capability to work independently, supported by the teacher, with groups or individual pupils.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience teaching in an alternative provision environment.
  • Understanding of curriculum, particularly literacy and numeracy requirements.
  • Evidence of successful work with disaffected and emotionally vulnerable pupils.

Salary

£17,941.67 – £18,000.78 pro‑rata (based on £25,500‑£25,584 full‑time equivalent per annum)

Contract

30 hours per week, Term Time only, 39 weeks per annum, 6‑month fixed term to cover sickness absence with possibility of extension after the fixed term. Access to a personal vehicle is a requirement.
