Job Description:

Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust for up to two colleagues to join us as a BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practitioner Degree Apprentice in association with Bournemouth University. We are looking for enthusiastic, proactive and motivated individuals to undertake the Operating Department Practice Degree Apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

You will learn a diverse set of skills in anaesthetics, surgery and recovery, allowing you to gain insight into all three of those clinical specialties. You will work with the theatre team as an ODP Apprentice on a 3‑year fixed‑term Band 3 contract, predominantly in the perioperative environment. The apprenticeship combines work and clinical placement learning with academic study, enabling the required 20% off the job training, and you will be required to travel to the University campus as needed throughout the training period.

Qualifications

Applicants must be eligible for the apprenticeship. Non‑UK nationals must also have a valid and eligible residency status, having been resident in the UK for at least three years and maintaining the right to remain for the duration of the apprenticeship (see apprenticeship funding rules 2025 to 2026). Successful completion of the BSc (Hons) and qualification with the HCPC will allow you to apply for a Band 5 ODP contract.

Benefits

Apprentices earn a salary, develop their skills, and achieve a nationally recognised qualification while contributing to excellent patient care. The NHS offers flexible working, pension contributions, market‑leading annual leave allowance, career progression and regular conversations. Additional benefits include the NHS Blue Light Card and NHS Discounts.
