As an Assistant Manager at HMP Brixton in South London, you will be responsible for leading and developing a team approach to the delivery of a high‑quality service to learners. You will support the Education Manager in overseeing site performance and, as part of the senior management team, maximise contract performance, develop curriculum, deliver quality provision and exceed the expectations of partners and learners in line with the company ethos of “Improving Peoples Lives”. You will deputise for the Education Manager in their absence on other occasions as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
Accountable to the Education Manager for the effective management of the curriculum and for taking the establishment lead for quality assurance and improvement within your curriculum area.
Develop and encourage an innovative, problem‑solving approach to tutor work to raise standards and meet challenging targets related to recruitment, retention, achievement and student satisfaction.
Support the Education Manager to set and monitor staff targets, ensuring contractual obligations are met and exceeded through the prison education appraisal and professional development procedures.
Develop and promote a curriculum that meets the identified needs of learners and employers, including the effective delivery of Functional Skills, personal and social development, and work‑based programmes.
Manage teaching and support staff using the full range of HR strategies to maximise student success and the efficiency of the provision.
Assist the Manager in preparing the annual self‑assessment report, Quality Improvement Plan and budget.
Develop a standardised learning and skills programme that meets the needs of the prison population and employers, ensuring parity across both sites and meeting Ofsted and Ministry of Justice requirements.
Develop and promote constructive relations with partners and other external agencies for the benefit of offenders and the communities the prison serves.
Work with Awarding Bodies to deliver appropriate qualifications within their quality standards.
Manage day‑to‑day operation of the Education Department, including learner induction, class allocation and conduct within the department.
Maintain and develop positive internal and external partnerships and attend meetings as required by the Education Manager.
Deliver teaching sessions as required.
Deputise the Education Manager in their absence, and may have responsibility for a specific site in multi‑site establishments dealing with day‑to‑day issues.
Meet contractual KPIs for success and performance.
Supervise staff to ensure suitability via application of probationary, appraisal and professional development procedures.
Collaborate with the Manager to optimise the use of resources and develop the facilities available to students.
Person Specification
Education, Training and Qualifications
- Essential: Level 5 or above teaching qualification.
- Desirable:
- English or Maths expertise/specialism – a minimum of Level 3.
- Grade 1 Lesson Observation within the last year (evidence required).
- Experience of coaching teachers to develop their own teaching practice.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Evidence of continuous professional development and the ability to develop and manage an achievement‑focused team.
- Creative and flexible approach towards achieving objectives and deadlines.
- Persuasive and supportive leadership and staff management skills.
- Ability to identify and implement continuous improvements to the curriculum in line with the needs and demands of learners and employers.
