Overview

Recruitment for Senior Support Assistants (SSAs) to join our school in September 2026 across three sites: Studley Green, Downley and Cressex. SSA positions include regular roles and maternity cover.

Salary: Bucks Pay Range 3

Contract: Permanent (Fixed Term Contract available)

Chiltern Wood School is a Special School supporting over 200 students aged 3 to 19 years across the three Cressex, Downley and Studley Green sites. We offer a supportive workplace committed to the wellbeing of pupils, parents, and staff.

About the Role

The SSA works closely with the classroom teacher and other staff to support the educational and social development of pupils and may lead classes to allow the teacher time to prepare. The role also involves planning lessons, supervising children, and maintaining pupil records.

Teaching and Learning

  • Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the guidance of the class teacher, line manager and other staff.
  • Assist in implementing Individual Education Programmes and curriculum target setting, and monitor pupil progress.
  • Provide support to individual pupils inside and outside the classroom so they can fully participate in activities.
  • Work with other professionals such as therapists and psychologists as necessary.
  • Maintain pupil records and support their professional monitoring.
  • Plan and prepare one morning or afternoon lesson per week with teacher support.
  • Lead classes to allow the teacher time for planning, preparation and assessment.
  • Supervise classes during short‑term absences of the teacher as required.

Administrative Duties

  • Ensure learning journals capture pupil progress under teacher direction.
  • Communicate with parents on a daily basis.
  • Report timely behaviour, medical and safeguarding information.

Standards and Quality Assurance

  • Support the aims and ethos of the school.
  • Set a good example in dress, punctuality and attendance.
  • Attend team and staff meetings as required.
  • Undertake professional duties reasonably assigned by the teacher.
  • Act proactively with regard to health and safety.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend to pupils’ physical wellbeing, including personal care as appropriate.
  • Supervise and escort pupils at the beginning and end of the day.
  • Engage pupils during break and lunchtime activities.
  • Undertake Team Teach training and any necessary professional development.
  • Complete Child Protection training in line with local authority guidance.
