Job Purpose
A PSV Company bus driver is responsible for driving a passenger‑caring vehicle (PCV) and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS buses.
Responsibilities
- Ensure safety and well‑being of clients throughout the journey and handover.
- Wear high‑visibility personal protective equipment in vehicle movement areas.
- Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
- Check the vehicle condition before service: safety walk‑round check, report defects, enter defects on the electronic ticket machine, and keep the vehicle clean and tidy.
- Comply with company regulations regarding mobile‑phone use, smoking, and prohibited equipment such as gaming consoles while on duty.
- Report safety accidents/incidents and maintain knowledge of emergency and evacuation plans.
- Keep the bus cab area safe, tidy and customer‑friendly.
- Provide a high standard of customer service, including giving journey information such as road closures and diversions.
- Behave friendly and professionally with both customers and colleagues.
- Recognise and assist children and vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled passengers.
- Drive the company vehicles safely, legally and professionally.
- Follow the set timetable, avoiding early or late departure when safe.
- Stay updated on road closures, diversions, and special events affecting the service.
- Hold a valid driving licence and CPC licence, available for inspection at any time.
- Report for work on time with the correct equipment and observe the company dress code.
- Report all safety, security, driving and customer‑service incidents to the line manager promptly.
- Report road closures, accidents, emergencies and highway repairs promptly.
- Participate in a yearly appraisal, give feedback for service improvement and adhere to HATS policies and procedures.
- Undertake any reasonable requests made by the company.
- Work flexible hours with core times 07:00‑09:00 and 14:30‑16:30, and undertake additional work as required.
Required Criteria
- Valid current UK (or acceptable other) drivers’ licence with a D1 category and no restrictions.
- No greater than 6 penalty points.
- Proven eligibility to work in the UK.
- Suitable references and proof of identity.
- Professional driving experience.
- Basic secondary school education or equivalent.
- Prepared to undertake training such as NVQ if required.
- Ability to drive to a competent and safe standard.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English (ESOL entry level 2 acceptable).
- Valid Driver qualification card (CPC).
- Valid Driver card (Tacho card).
- Medical renewal up to date as required for licence.
- Communication of any change affecting licensing (sickness, injury, conviction) to line manager.
- Availability for inspection of licence every six months.
- Licensed to report for work with appropriate equipment and observe company dress code.
