Volunteering Support Leader – Canal & River Trust

Base pay range

£28,470 per annum (actual pay based on skills and experience – contact recruiter for details).

Location & Coverage

Based in our North West or Yorkshire North East regions, with remote working and travel across the wider North regional waterway network required. Main office hub: Leeds or Burnley. Travel is expected 2–3 times a week, with working‑from‑home/hub options provided. Longer travel distances may be required per team needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit and engage new volunteers and volunteer groups through meet‑and‑greet events, open days, and community engagement.
  • Integrate new volunteers into regional construction teams, coordinating inductions, training and day‑to‑day task management.
  • Liaise with construction managers and site supervisors to identify needs and volunteer opportunities.
  • Support volunteer training, PPE and equipment requirements.
  • Assist colleagues with volunteer engagement and integration within their teams.
  • Help schedule volunteering support on key construction projects.
  • Ensure volunteer processes align with Trust procedures.

First 6 Months

  • Identify opportunities for volunteer support.
  • Review skills of current volunteers and recruit new ones.
  • Embed volunteers within teams through training and support of task managers.
  • Recruit, train and embed a Lead Volunteer or volunteers.
  • Develop the volunteering role within Direct Services, increasing engagement and skills.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the Direct Services team in recruitment and selection of volunteers.
  • Advise task managers on volunteer management.
  • Collate skills availability within the volunteer population to match opportunities.
  • Consult with volunteers and volunteer groups to match capabilities to needs.
  • Prepare volunteer requirements for the Direct Services team.
  • Develop lead volunteers for the team.
  • Coordinate equipment, logistics, training and safety for volunteer works.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and wellbeing.

Technical Skills

  • Experience leading and working with volunteers.
  • Experience delivering works on time, to specification and within budget.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Basic IT skills – comfortable with handheld devices and mobile applications.
  • Valid UK driving licence (essential).

General Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3 or BTEC Level 3 in an appropriate subject, or equivalent experience (desirable).
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Attention to quality and standards of work.
  • Excellent communication and customer‑service awareness; representative of Canal & River Trust.
  • Experience in a relevant outdoor, environmental, or customer‑service environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
