Peer Mentor Role Description
A Peer Mentor is a volunteer who has experienced similar challenges and supports people toward education, work, or employment. Volunteers gain confidence, empowerment and can access a more positive sense of identity.
Are You the Right Candidate?
- Are you able to devote 1-2 hours a week for a period of 3 months at our supported accommodation, Oasis House?
- Can you inspire others, give them hope through self‑disclosure and be an example of recovery?
- Can you build relationships based on trust, acceptance, understanding and empathy from a shared lived experience?
- Can you tap into your own experience to help us identify barriers, gaps in services, good practice and areas for improvement?
Key Responsibilities
- Inspire service users using personal life experiences and be a positive role model.
- Provide a safe sounding board, listen without judgement.
- Help improve wellbeing, confidence, and independence by exploring supportive activities.
- Assist service users to engage with formalised support.
- Attend required training and development opportunities.
Skills Required
- Strong communication skills, including active listening.
- Enthusiasm and interest in encouraging proactive recovery.
- Teamwork, willingness to seek support from the peer mentor and volunteer team.
- Reliability and commitment to clients and meetings.
- Respect for confidentiality and ability to protect privacy.
- Maintain personal boundaries.
Recruitment and Training
- After applying, the Peer Mentoring Coordinator will arrange a meeting to discuss the role.
- We will request two references and apply for an enhanced DBS check.
- Full training will be provided over a two‑day period.
