Job Summary

We are seeking a patient, caring and reliable support worker to support our client Jemima, born in 2021. Jemima is a happy and sociable little girl who lives with her parents and sister; her older half siblings come to stay once a week and in the holidays. Jemima enjoys watching CocoMelon and Peppa Pig, she also loves 1:1 play, music, playing with water and being pushed on her swing. Jemima was born with a chromosomal syndrome and has an associated learning disability and developmental delay. She is making progress with her verbal speech; she has an increasing vocabulary of words she uses regularly, and she will repeat words back to you. Jemima can mobilise independently for short distances but can be unsteady on her feet. Jemima lacks safety awareness and displays sensory seeking behaviours, she must be supervised at all times.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Supporting in all activities of daily living to include personal care
  • Providing safety and wellbeing of Jemima
  • Facilitate access to leisure activities outside of the family home on a 2:1 basis
  • Assist in therapeutic programmes at the guidance of the team of therapists
  • Working co-operatively with Jemima’s parents and the Case Manager
  • Effective communication
  • Work with patience, tact, understanding, warmth and compassion

Essential

  • Female – personal care required.
  • Handling Management Plan designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries may require you to bend, kneel, squat or lunge to ensure good posture during handling tasks.
  • Confident about working in Jemima’s own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of the parents.
  • Aptitude and desire to work with children with complex needs.
  • Patient, tolerant and consistent approach.
  • Cheerful, caring and positive attitude.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and a good communicator.
  • Flexible – to help with the other children in the family and general running of the household as and when the need arises.
  • Proactive approach to developing an appropriate range of activities.
  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and to respect Jemima and their family’s need for privacy.
  • Happy to learn new things in accordance with Jemima’s programme.
  • Flexible with start and finish times according to the needs of Jemima.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Confident with using I.T.
  • Comfortable to be around animals (Jemima has a dog).
  • UK driving licence and a vehicle that is serviced, insured and has an up to date MOT

Desirable

  • Experience of working with children with special needs (This is preferred but enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn is desirable).
  • Qualifications in caring for children/young people with severe disabilities.
  • Experience with working with children who have behaviour that challenges.
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Ability to work additional hours as required.
  • Able to work flexible hours, sometimes at short notice.
  • Previous experience of using specialist equipment with disabled people.
  • Experience of carrying out physiotherapy and/or multi-sensory programmes.
  • NVQ level 2 or above.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using signing as a form of communication, (Makaton, Signalong, British Sign Language).
