Job Description
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Fisheries Technical Officer in South Cumbria and Lancashire working to protect and enhance our diverse habitats and wildlife.
Field work will include fisheries input into a wide range of Environment Agency activities such as flood and coastal management programmes, environmental permitting, fisheries regulation, incident management, project delivery and Water Framework Directive activities. You will work closely with internal and external customers, proactively identifying and influencing opportunities to deliver fisheries benefits.
The area is home to a diverse range of freshwater environments across upland and lowland rivers and lakes with salmonid and coarse fish populations, presenting a challenging landscape with mixed rural and urban pressures on our fisheries.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver fisheries advice for riverine and stillwater fisheries.
- Drive project and programme management on environmental issues.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyse and interpret technical data to support decision-making.
- Plan, prioritise and manage conflicting demands to achieve timely outcomes.
- Travel across South Cumbria and Lancashire for site visits and meetings.
- Participate in incident management and contribute to enforcement and regulatory efforts.
Team
You will be part of a highly motivated Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology Team delivering a range of environmental improvements. The team operates across functions and organisations to make a positive difference to people and the environment.
Experience and Skills Required
- Qualified to degree level (or equivalent experience) in an environmental or technical discipline.
- Good technical knowledge supporting the delivery of fisheries conservation and improvement.
- Excellent communication, influencing and team working skills.
- Good time‑management and project delivery skills.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and present technical data.
- Ability to manage conflicting demands and prioritise tasks.
- Willingness to learn about fisheries incidents.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to swim.
- Capacity to work in all weather conditions and in the field.
