Phlebotomist/Health Care Assistant (Clinical)
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic phlebotomist or potential team member to join us. This role would be perfect for someone looking to make a foray into General Practice or someone who is already a phlebotomist and is looking to extend their skills in a great working environment. The Family Practice currently has over 17,000 patients, making it a busy and rewarding environment whilst being part of a large but close‑knit team. We are ideally looking for someone who has experience; however, we are prepared to train the right person. We are located close to the centre of Bristol, within walking distance from the centre and Whiteladies Road, and easily accessible by bus and train. We also have on‑site parking.
The successful candidate will be working 2-3 days a week and the occasional Saturday, with plenty of notice given.
Main duties of the job
Clinical responsibilities:
- Work alongside the clinicians in the provision of patient care, and in accordance with the practice protocols & procedures. Having received appropriate training and competency verified, the post holder will undertake the following tasks, referring to the treatment room nurses, nurse manager and GPs as necessary.
- Carry out venepuncture as requested on ICE by the GP, nurse or secondary care.
- Record routine and emergency ECGs as requested by a GP.
- Measure height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, blood sugar and oxygen saturations; record the results in the patient notes and be aware of normal ranges and when to alert a GP or nurse of unusual results.
- Carry out annual mental health physical checks and bloods using the appropriate template and liaise with GP/nurse about booking their review.
- Explain and attach 24hr blood pressure machines as requested by a GP/nurse.
- Give adult flu injections as per patient‑specific directions written by a GP and as per practice protocol.
- Act as a chaperone for GP/nurse when needed.
- Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients as and when instructed.
- Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team.
- Be aware of and follow the infection control policy.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
Qualifications
- Ability to write clear concise notes.
- Calm manner.
- Enthusiasm to learn.
- Qualified in Phlebotomy.
