Job Description

Work as part of a team in the Health & Wellbeing Centre taking into consideration the nursing and pastoral needs of pupils across each area of school.

  • Work within a shift pattern with two other nurses and a health care assistant, covering on‑call hours and, when required, sleep over night in the Health & Wellbeing Centre.

Nursing

  • Provide nursing services to pupils, staff and visitors on site.
  • Organise and run nurse drop‑in clinics for routine medication and nursing needs.
  • Arrange appointments for the Doctor’s surgery and for boarding pupils with medical, dental or other health appointments.
  • Assess, implement and evaluate in‑patient care for pupils admitted to the Health & Wellbeing Centre.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care and maintain stock of all school first aid kits.
  • Offer confidential health advice as appropriate.
  • Develop individual care plans to meet the physical and emotional needs of pupils where possible.

Preventive Health

  • Carry out pupil surveillance programmes.
  • Follow good practice and directives on immunisation procedures.
  • Operate procedures for infectious disease control and safe disposal of clinical waste.
  • Maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness.

Health Education

  • Promote health education throughout the school population.
  • Take part in delivering Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons.
  • Keep up to date with current health promotion initiatives.

Administrative

  • Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
  • Record administration of drugs in line with the School Medication policy.
  • Advise and assist the Lead School Nurse in writing health policies and medical protocols.
  • Set up and organise school medical examinations and other surveillance audits.

Health and Safety

  • Participate in health and safety initiatives affecting staff, pupils or the environment.
  • Keep records of reported accidents and child protection procedures.
  • Assist the Lead School Nurse with risk assessments and develop individual pupil Health Care Plans.

Liaison – Internal

  • Work within the nursing team and liaise closely with house masters, mistresses, teaching and non‑teaching staff.
  • Communicate with the Wellbeing Lead, Lead School Nurse and school counsellors.
  • Attend half‑term Health and Safety meetings and other meetings in the Lead School Nurse’s absence.

Liaison – External

  • Maintain relationships with the local GP practice and School Doctor.
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary health professionals, pharmacy, consultants, orthodontists, dentists and opticians.
  • Coordinate appointments and admissions staff for specialist services.
  • Engage with parents, guardians and carers.

Training

  • Provide training on medical conditions to staff to raise awareness and keep basic skills up to date.
  • Attend regular CPD training to maintain skills and experience.
