Thrive Group Oldham are currently recruiting on behalf of Oldham Council for Refuse Loaders. Please see job description below;
Expectations of the Role
- The role is very physical (mostly manual handling of heavy waste containers).
- You will be required to walk a number of miles per day (dependent on collection round).
- You will be required to work in all types of weather; you should be prepared with correct uniform and provisions each day (cold/hot drinks and food, additional clothing, waterproofs etc).
- There are a number of health & safety instructions (Safe Systems of work) which must be adhered to.
- The role can be pressured as you will be working to tight time frames to ensure the rounds are completed.
- You will be working alongside members of the public, so be mindful of your behaviour and approach.
- You are ultimately representing the council and THRIVE, where inappropriate actions and behaviour will not be tolerated.
Working Week
The Waste Management Service works Monday to Friday with occasional overtime on Saturdays. The standard working day is 9 hours 10 minutes long with a 45-minute break. Bank holidays are a normal working day and are offered at double pay for those selected to work. The day starts at 7:00 am; we ask you to arrive by 7:00 am so the managers at Oldham Council can check you in and assign you to your round and vehicle in plenty of time so the round can begin on time at 7:15 am. The finish time is 5:10 pm each day. Please report to the window at the depot to register yourself for work that day. If you are late, the council holds the right to turn you away and send you home without pay.
Uniform and PPE
Full uniform and PPE will be provided by Oldham Council. You must not wear anything that has not been provided by the Council (except for headwear such as caps and hats or clothes to keep you warm which can be worn under your uniform). Failure to comply with uniform and PPE requirements may result in your removal from work. Any defects/faults or issues in your uniform/PPE must be reported to your line manager immediately. Disciplinary action can be implemented for failure to comply with the requirements of uniform and PPE as they do contribute to your health and safety at work.
- Hard-sole, steel-toe capped boots
- Grade 3 highly visual vest
- Mandatory hearing PPE if working on a comingled round (collecting glass, cans and plastic bottles)
Pay and Opportunities
Rates of pay: £13.18 per hour rising to £13.47 after 12 qualifying weeks of service. Temp to perm opportunities are available for the right candidates.
