Technician 2
Reports to: School Principal via the designated line manager.
Responsible for: Up to 5 staff.
Job Purpose
To provide technical support and assistance to teaching staff in the implementation of the school’s/department’s educational programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise appropriate staff (shared supervision), including managing and allocating duties.
- Identify and provide on‑the‑job training to staff.
- Provide and maintain facilities and practical resources.
- Assist teaching staff in developing and manufacturing teaching aids and models.
- Prepare resources for all classes, including setting up, testing, demonstrating and dismantling suitable resources as per agreed schemes of work.
- Collect, clean and store all equipment and materials securely in designated storage areas; ensure items are maintained in a state of ready for use.
- Dispose of used materials in a safe and approved manner.
- Ensure that mandatory and/or statutory checks of materials and equipment are carried out by qualified personnel.
- Inform the line manager of any materials or equipment found to be in an unsatisfactory or unsafe condition and arrange for repair or disposal.
- Ensure no unauthorised person has unsupervised access to equipment and materials when not in use.
- Advise on health and safety issues related to equipment use.
Administrative Duties
- Develop, maintain and operate manual and computerised systems for administrative tasks related to the area of work.
- Maintain an inventory and records of departmental resources.
- Assist in ordering, purchasing, receiving, checking, storing and distributing resources.
General Duties
- Support all staff in ensuring the general safety of pupils.
- Assist with evacuation in emergencies.
- Undertake photocopying as required.
- Carry out minor maintenance repairs within competence.
- Handle cash related to purchase of practical materials.
- Assist with hospitality at meetings and school functions.
Flexibility and Working Hours
Three working options are available:1. On duty during school term plus two additional weeks, timing at the discretion of the Principal.2. On duty for the contracted weekly hours, working during periods of school closure except when on annual leave or other authorised absence; alternative work or training may be provided by the Authority as required.3. As option 2, with an option to request unpaid leave during extended school holidays or closures.The post will be reviewed in light of changing circumstances and is intended as a guideline. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay in accordance with equality legislation.
Requirements – Essential Criteria
- Five GCSEs (Grades A*-C) including English, Maths and a subject specialization, or equivalent higher qualifications.
- Minimum one‑year experience in staff management and supervision.
- Knowledge of Technician 2 requirements, health and safety regulations, and general administrative processes and records.
- High standard spoken Irish (demonstrated at interview).
- Proven effective planning, organisational and people‑management skills; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with sound interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos during interview.
Desirable Criteria
- Minimum one year of experience in an art and design related area.
