An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to manage and maintain the gardens and grounds of a beautiful private estate in Lewes, Sussex. The property spans approximately 19 acres, with 10–15 acres requiring regular care and maintenance.
This is a fully organic estate, committed to supporting wildlife and natural ecosystems, with no use of chemicals or pesticides. We are seeking a knowledgeable and environmentally conscious gardener who genuinely values nature, biodiversity, and sustainable gardening practices.
The successful candidate will take overall responsibility for the management and presentation of the gardens and grounds, supported by additional local help when required. There will also be an Assistant Gardener/Groundsman to assist with duties such as maintaining the natural swimming pool and helping to ensure exceptionally high standards are maintained across the property at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Overall management and maintenance of the estate gardens and grounds
- Upkeep of lawns, hedges, borders, and planted areas to a high standard
- Monitoring and coordinating external contractors, including tree surgeons when required
- Ensuring the natural swimming pool is functioning and maintained correctly
- Carrying out general groundskeeping and ad hoc estate duties
- Managing and maintaining an organic kitchen garden, including organically grown vegetables and seasonal planting
- Promoting and protecting wildlife-friendly gardening practices throughout the estate
- Maintaining high standards of presentation, health, and safety across the property
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience in a senior gardening or estate gardening role
- Strong knowledge of organic gardening methods and sustainable land management
- A genuine passion for wildlife, biodiversity, and chemical-free gardening
- Experience managing kitchen gardens and growing organic produce
- Good practical skills across all aspects of grounds and garden maintenance
- The ability to work independently and oversee external contractors where necessary
- A proactive, hands-on, and flexible approach
