Job Description:

This is a Locum Consultant post for maternity cover. The remit of the postholder is to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for the dental care group at King’s College Dental Hospital, and to provide and develop paediatric dental services to the Trust’s paediatric patients. The position is based at Denmark Hill and the proposed job plan is 10 PAs with no on‑call commitment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide a high‑quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
  • Share responsibility for 24‑hour, 7‑day a week cover on a rota basis, covering colleague periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in the contract.
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  • Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties, contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Maintain outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
  • Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  • Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
  • Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan, including discussions with internal and external agencies.
  • Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for the service(s).
  • Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering and developing projects and ensuring the momentum of post‑qualification education is maintained.
  • Work with clinical and other professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and enhance job satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process.
  • Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  • Comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environment and food hygiene.
  • Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistently with evidence‑based practice and patient safety.
  • Support and contribute equally to consultant‑led 7‑day services in future developments.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: Registerable Dental qualification
  • Essential: Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent
  • Desirable: Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)

Registration

  • Essential: Full Registration with GMC
  • Essential: Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
  • Essential: On the day of interview applicants must be within 6 months of CCT, in final stages of their portfolio pathway application, or be fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register.

Training and Experience

  • Essential: Successful completion of an SAC approved minimum three‑year training programme in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent
  • Essential: Successful completion of an SAC approved minimum two‑year training in a Post CCST Appointment following the pre‑CCST training period of three years, or within 6 months of completion.

Administration

  • Experience in day‑to‑day organisation of clinical paediatric dentistry services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
  • Familiar with current structure of the UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi‑disciplinary teams
  • Desirable: Management course and/or qualification

Audit and Quality Improvement

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
  • Audit Publications

Research and Publications

  • Experience of clinical research
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
  • Desirable: Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Paediatric Dentistry

Teaching

  • Experience of undergraduate and post‑graduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Desirable: Teaching skills course/qualification
