Highway Inspector – Liverpool

Pay: £239.85 per day. PAYE – Reference: OR100549.

Schedule: 2 days Hybrid but will be on site most the time.

Full‑time role on a temporary basis.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect highways assets to ensure safety for public use and take appropriate action, including issuing work to contractors, checking completed work, and monitoring progress. Part of the highways on‑call system to respond to emergencies out of hours, including winter maintenance.
  • Undertake highway related inspections (both walked and driven) in accordance with the Highways Act 1980, the New Roads & Street Works Act 1991, and Well‑Managed Highways Infrastructure – A code of Practice, maintaining and updating all associated records.
  • Ensure all works/inspections are undertaken within correct time‑scales and to appropriate standards, in line with current policy and guidelines, achieving business and service targets.
  • Log and report defects on assets such as carriageway and footway surfaces, street furniture, carriageway markings and highway drainage.
  • Raise work orders following routine Section 58 inspections, ad‑hoc inspections, claims investigations, and serviceability inspections, checking that works are carried out correctly and to required standards.
  • Investigate reports/complaints of highway defects received from members of the public and other sources and take action as appropriate.
  • Assist with establishing and implementing a programme of inspections and investigations.
  • Report and respond to emergencies in accordance with the emergency procedure and be part of the out‑of‑hours service as part of an on‑call system rota for emergencies, incl. winter maintenance.
  • Use computer and handheld devices in support of reactive maintenance delivery.
  • Monitor, police and liaise with persons or bodies wishing to execute works on the Public Highway.
  • Manage obstructions/defective works; raise Section 81 (New Roads & Street Works Act 1991) defect notices where needed.
  • Liaise with Utility Companies, Contractors, Public, Councillors, litigation representatives and claimants; attend meetings as required.
  • Prepare letters, statutory notices, reports, statements and other documents; serve such notices and attend court in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Assist the Reactive Maintenance Manager in performance improvement efforts.
  • Prioritise work to resolve highway issues and enquiries, including dropped crossing requests.
  • Promote the client with statutory authorities, external organisations, community and other stakeholders.
