Workshop Construction Technician – Prison Education

Location: HMP Millsike, Full SuttonSalary: From £28,000 (dependent on experience)Contract: PermanentHours: Full-time

The Role

We are seeking a practical, hands‑on Multi‑Skills Technician to support vocational construction workshop(s) within a prison environment. Working alongside a Multi‑Skills Trainer, you will help deliver engaging and practical learning sessions where learners develop trade skills in areas such as plastering, painting and decorating, tiling, and dry lining.

This is a rewarding role where you can make a real difference-supporting rehabilitation, building employability skills, and helping learners progress towards industry‑recognised qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain workshop areas, tools, and materials
  • Support practical demonstrations and training sessions
  • Work towards delivery of City & Guilds Level 2 vocational standards
  • Provide hands‑on guidance and encouragement to learners
  • Ensure health, safety, and security protocols are followed at all times
  • Manage stock, tools, and workshop equipment safely
  • Maintain attendance records and support learner progress tracking
  • Work effectively with prison staff to ensure smooth workshop delivery

What We’re Looking For

  • Level 2 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a construction trade
  • Hands‑on experience in trades such as plastering, tiling, painting & decorating, or dry lining
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Calm, confident approach with the ability to support learners effectively
  • Positive attitude towards rehabilitation and professional development
  • Willingness to work towards a teaching or assessing qualification if not already held

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Experience in a vocational or training environment
  • Level 2 English and Maths
  • Knowledge of City & Guilds qualifications
  • Awareness of workshop safety standards and restorative practices
