Staff Nurse, Band 5 – Critical Care

Closing date: 14 June 2026. We invite passionate and enthusiastic nurses to join the award‑winning Critical Care team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Our comprehensive onboarding includes 6‑weeks supernumerary status, an orientation day, in‑house education, and a mentorship programme aligned with the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care. Dedicated Clinical Nurse Educators support continuous professional development.

The post is available in full or part‑time and allows rotation into nights during a 4‑week rota, weekend duties, and cross‑site posting at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH).

Main duties of the job

  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care of patients within Critical Care in accordance with UK law, the NMC code of conduct and Trust values.
  • Act as a professional role‑model and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage a caseload of patients within the defined clinical area.
  • Organise own time and that of non‑registered staff, students and other learners.
  • Support senior staff in management and supervision of the defined clinical area.
  • Work on Critical Care in both GRH and CGH depending upon service need.
  • Mentor and assess learners, contributing to a good learning environment.

Job responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, complex critical care, using specialised equipment and resources.
  • Administer medications, including continuous infusions, following POPAM guidelines.
  • Communicate delicate information with sensitivity while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in mentorship, education programmes and clinical governance.
  • Utilise hospital computer systems (intranet, Trak‑care, EPR, PAS).
  • Maintain accurate written records.
  • Complete the National Competency Framework, Level 1 within 18 months if new to critical care.

Leadership and management

  • Comply with Trust and departmental policies (Health and Safety, Manual Handling, Data Protection, safeguarding).
  • Report sickness, near misses, incidents and facilitate investigations.
  • Contribute to development of practice standards.
  • Maintain a professional image in line with Trust policy.

Education and training

  • Participate in departmental education programmes.
  • Supervise, mentor and educate less experienced staff.
  • Undertake mandatory training.
  • Commit to research‑based practice and clinical excellence.

Improving quality and developing practice

  • Keep professional development updated, register with NMC.
  • Engage in audit and research projects.
  • Contribute to clinical governance and quality agenda.
  • Share clinical knowledge locally and nationally.
  • Engage in clinical supervision.
  • Identify and align own development needs with service objectives.
  • Contribute to policy development.
  • Question and challenge practice constructively.

Working conditions

  • Use recognised manual handling techniques.
  • Frequently manoeuvre patients/objects over 15 kg with aids.
  • Follow policies for bodily fluids, infection control, COSHH.
  • Deal with distressing emotional situations and verbal/physical abuse from patients.
  • Work demanding, long periods of concentration; maintain standards under pressure.

Summary of position

The Band 5 nurse will assess and deliver care to complex critically ill patients across a continuous rotational basis between CGH and GRH, under the supervision of experienced critical care nursing staff.

Qualifications and experience

  • Registered Adult Nurse with NMC registration and appropriate acute post‑registration experience.
  • Newly qualified nurses are considered.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (portfolio, revalidation).
  • Recent acute NHS experience.
  • Experience in an acute clinical environment and relevant speciality.

Knowledge / skills

  • Able to lead, supervise, and supervise non‑registered and less experienced staff.
  • Escalate concerns to reduce risk.
  • Commit to developing specialist competencies.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Understand and promote Trust values.

Disclosure and Barring Service check

Subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, a DBS check is required.

Salary

£32,073 to £39,043 per year (pro rata if part‑time).
