Engineering Manager (Design)

The Role

  • Seeking an experienced Engineering Manager (Design) to lead design coordination on major projects
  • Act as the technical lead, managing multiple design consultants and ensuring programme alignment
  • Oversee design inputs/outputs, ensuring compliance with contract requirements and quality standards
  • They will support the Project Manager with design reporting, governance, and stakeholder coordination

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate design consultants and deliverables across the project lifecycle
  • Lead resolution of design queries (RFIs) and technical issues
  • Review designs for compliance, constructability, and contract alignment
  • Produce and maintain design programmes, reports, and deliverable schedules
  • Chair design reviews, interface meetings, and stakeholder workshops
  • Manage design change control and approval processes
  • Collaborate with client representatives and external stakeholders
  • Oversee document control, drawings issuance, and design communications
  • Support procurement and engagement of suppliers and subcontractors
  • Lead engagement with approval bodies (e.g. TAA, NR, LUL)

Key Requirements

  • Strong experience as an Engineering Manager / Design Manager within construction or infrastructure
  • Proven background managing multi-disciplinary design teams and consultants
  • Experience delivering large, complex projects (energy, rail, or infrastructure preferred)
  • Prior experience in a design consultancy or temporary works design environment
  • Strong knowledge of design assurance, approvals, and change management processes
  • Ability to chair technical meetings and engage senior stakeholders
  • Understanding of Principal Designer duties and CDM regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to drive programme, quality, and performance
