Job Description:

Control Systems Engineer

Location: Essex

Salary: Competitive + Benefits

Are you a Control Systems Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems across PLCs, SCADA, networking, virtualised environments and industrial infrastructure?

This is an opportunity to join a major manufacturing operation where you’ll play a key role in maintaining, improving and developing critical control systems across a complex process environment. You’ll work on everything from PLC and SCADA development through to network troubleshooting, cybersecurity, instrumentation and project delivery.

This role would suit someone who enjoys being the technical expert that can see the bigger picture. You’ll be just as comfortable diagnosing PLC logic as you are investigating network communications, firewall issues or SCADA server infrastructure.

The Role

As a Control Systems Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the design, development, maintenance and support of industrial control systems across multiple manufacturing facilities.

Working closely with engineering, maintenance and project teams, you’ll be involved in a broad range of activities including system upgrades, new installations, fault finding, commissioning and continuous improvement projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, development and modification of PLC and SCADA systems
  • Supporting and maintaining process control systems across operational plants
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting of PLC, SCADA, instrumentation and communications issues
  • Developing project documentation including FDS, URS, control narratives and Cause & Effect documentation
  • Supporting commissioning activities and site-based project delivery
  • Assisting with instrumentation specification, configuration and integration
  • Participating in HAZOPs, MOCs and other process safety activities
  • Providing technical support and guidance to maintenance teams
  • Identifying opportunities for system optimisation, reliability improvements and standardisation

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a well-rounded Control Systems Engineer who understands not only PLCs and SCADA, but also the wider infrastructure that modern industrial control systems rely upon.

You’ll ideally have experience in:

  • Allen Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix and FactoryTalk environments
  • Siemens S7 and WinCC systems
  • PLC programming, diagnostics and commissioning
  • SCADA design, development and support
  • Industrial Ethernet networking and communications
  • Managed switches and network troubleshooting
  • Layer 3 networking, routing, VLANs and IP addressing
  • Virtualised environments such as VMware or Hyper-V
  • Firewall configuration and industrial cybersecurity principles
  • Instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow and level systems
  • SIL, SIF and functional safety concepts

Most importantly, you’ll be someone who can troubleshoot across the entire control system stack – from field devices and PLCs through to SCADA servers, network infrastructure and cybersecurity controls.

Why Apply?

This is a genuinely varied engineering position where no two days are the same. You’ll be involved in everything from hands-on fault finding and plant support through to large-scale control system projects and infrastructure improvements.

You’ll be joining a business that values technical expertise and gives engineers the opportunity to make a real impact on plant performance, reliability and future technology development.

If you’re a Control Systems Engineer who enjoys working across PLCs, SCADA, networking and industrial infrastructure, we’d be keen to hear from you.
