Architects, Technologists and Architectural Assistants aren’t required by law on a project. A BR PD is.
Perhaps that is why the perks, the salary, the respect and value for your time, and working conditions would be vastly improved if you switched over.
It’s all there for the Architectural Professional who has dreamed about something more, personally as well as professionally.
There’d never be any reason for you to do more than your contracted hours. These consultants don’t have a ‘by the seat of your pants’ resourcing style or business model that relies on taking advantage of employees (that’s what lots of unpaid hours is) to make ends meet.
You’d get 3 days working from home as a minimum.
You have enough flexibility that you could start late in the morning, meet friends for a two-hour lunch, pick the kids up, and start again after they’ve gone to bed. On the same day, and catch up the rest of the week.
30 days holidays + bank holidays will allow you the breaks you need too and complete the lifestyle revamp you can expect in this new job and new sector as a whole.
The progression is quick. Within 2 years you’d expect to be earning £65,000+, in a sector that’s still building its first generation of specialists, there isn’t anyone ahead of you in the queue.
You’ll still do DTMs (but from a different seat), you’ll still visit sites locally, and you’ll see the team in person whenever you want to.
You’ll also still be an Architect / Architectural Technologist. They’ll maintain your CPD hours, your subscriptions and will probably be keen to add more quals and certifications.
What you’ll be doing
Act as and / or Assist the Duty Holder / Principal Designer under the Building Safety Act 2022, ensuring compliance with relevant Building Regulations.
Projects will be non-HRBs so no need for that HRB experience.
Advise End User Clients on their responsibilities and assist in making key decisions with regards BSA compliance.
Help manage and advise on Design elements and general process to ensure regulatory requirements are met. Assist project teams in the development of compliant design.
Manage and submit design documentation for regulatory approval, including liaising with Building Safety Regulator (BSR), Building Control and Fire Authorities etc.
Anything you don’t know can be supported and taught.
What you’ll need
Currently you’ll be a ‘mid-level’ Architect, Architectural Technician / Technologist or Architectural Assistant.
Good knowledge of the building regulations (though you mostly just need to know where to look).
Minimal previous experience of any BR PD activities whether as the Duty Holder directly or whether assisting or acting on behalf of a colleague who holds the position.
Plenty of training and assistance will be provided.
