Job Title and Contract

Cardiology Grade Consultant – fixed term 12‑month contract. Full time (10 sessions per week, 8–8.5 direct clinical care and 2–1.5 supporting professional activities).

Site: Royal Blackburn Hospital, Blackburn. Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum. Closing date: 10/06/2026.

Job Overview

The post requires a senior interventional cardiologist to deliver independent cardiology services to inpatients and outpatients in a high demand area. The appointee will also undertake formal teaching, audit programmes, management duties and participation in a consultant on‑call rota.

Main Duties of the Job

  • CCU and Cardiology Ward rounds
  • Cath Lab sessions (elective and emergency/inpatient cases)
  • Timely review of patient results and investigations
  • Preparation of correspondence, reports and other documents as needed
  • Active role in the teaching of junior doctors
  • Participation in clinical audit
  • Other duties allocated by the Clinical Director to ensure proper patient care and department management (as mutually agreed)

Person Specification

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Higher degree in Cardiology Specific Training

Training

  • Relevant Cardiology courses and meetings attendance
  • Completion of Radiation Protection Course

Experience

  • Clinical duties including assessment, diagnosis and care planning of medical patients with safe discharge and follow‑up
  • Clinical practice in Cardiology
  • Ability to lead when appropriate
  • Ability to work independently

Skills

  • Teaching and training of other doctors and allied professionals
  • Clear written and spoken communication with other professionals
  • Ability to clinically assess published research and incorporate it into practice
  • Knowledge and experience of multidisciplinary audit principles and practice

Professional Interests

  • Cardiology, with sub‑specialist interest in intervention
  • Other general medical specialties

Management Ability

  • Ability to organise workload and arrange priorities
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgement when faced with conflicting pressures

Personal Skills

  • Work effectively and efficiently under pressure both independently and in a team
  • Experience in patient education and counselling
