Apply for the Hardware Engineering Manager
Location: Theale
Job Description:

We’re building something powerful. Let’s build it together. We’ve delivered high-performance embedded computing solutions for four decades across industries including defence, telecoms, and aerospace. We’re proud to be experts in what we do and are looking for more brilliant people to join our team.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Programmes & Engineering, the Hardware Engineering Manager will lead, develop and empower a team of hardware engineers to deliver market-leading, mission‑critical products. The role is centred on achieving delivery excellence through people. Aligning work to individual strengths, building capability across the team, and fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing to reduce single points of failure. By creating a resilient, well‑balanced team and guiding delivery using the latest, often pre‑released technologies, you will enable consistent, high‑quality outcomes in demanding environments.

What will I be delivering?

  • Leading and supporting a team of hardware engineers and design authorities to deliver high‑quality embedded electronic designs, with clear ownership across architecture, schematics and PCB layout, principally around Intel x86 architecture.
  • Keeping delivery on track by continuously reviewing how we work, partnering with the wider engineering community to make things simpler and more effective.
  • Making sure designs are robust, well thought through, and ready for review – meeting functional, quality and lifecycle expectations.
  • Pulling together strong, clear technical submissions for lifecycle reviews, covering documentation, safety and quality standards.
  • Working closely with software and systems teams to make sure hardware integrates smoothly and performs reliably as part of the bigger picture.
  • Collaborating with product, software and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable and aligned to what the business needs.
  • Keeping stakeholders up to date with clear, honest views on technical progress and risk – no surprises.
  • Building a great team environment by role‑modeling the culture – trust, accountability, collaboration, and continual improvement.
  • Supporting your team day to day – coaching, developing, managing performance, and making sure people are set up to do their best work.

What do I need to bring with me?

Essential knowledge & experience:

  • Experience delivering embedded computer designs using Intel x86 architectures, with the credibility to guide and review detailed design work.
  • Strong problem‑solving and debugging skills, with the ability to work through complex technical challenges.
  • A solid understanding of the full product lifecycle—from concept through to development, verification, and release.
  • Experience identifying, managing, and mitigating technical risk within hardware programmes.
  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronic Engineering or a closely related field.
  • A passion for technology, continuous improvement, and developing others.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of design for test and manufacture.
  • Experience designing for rugged or challenging environments.
  • Understanding of embedded software and hardware interaction.
  • Awareness of high‑speed digital design challenges.

What’s in it for me?

  • A chance to lead and shape complex, cutting‑edge embedded products using Intel x86 technologies.
  • A true player‑manager role—combining hands‑on technical work with leading and growing a team.
  • A high‑performing environment—we expect the best and reward it accordingly.
  • A supportive, down‑to‑earth culture where people are trusted and supported to do their best work.
  • Real development through day‑to‑day learning, exposure, and meaningful responsibility—not just formal training.
