Introduction & Role Purpose
The Technical Manager – Statistics is a senior specialist responsible for providing deep technical and strategic support and delivery within the statistical domain. The role focuses on methodological input, project delivery and quality assurance, training, and business development.
Core Knowledge
- Deep expertise in statistical analysis methodologies, including advanced and innovative techniques.
- Strong understanding of best practice in statistical design, execution, quality control, and interpretation.
- Knowledge of project economics, including budgeting, resourcing, timelines, and risk management for analytical deliverables.
- Awareness of emerging developments, tools, and technologies in statistical analysis and their application in consultancy and client work.
Critical Thinking & Attention to Detail
- Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and strategic misalignment in analytical approaches, proposing clear solutions proactively to safeguard project quality.
- Ensure QA processes are embedded across projects and rigorously followed.
- Apply rigorous analytical thinking to ensure methodological accuracy, robustness, and consistency across projects.
- Review and challenge assumptions, methods, and outputs to maintain high technical and quality standards.
- Shape and review statistical deliverables, ensuring methodological appropriateness and precision.
Time Management & Collaboration
- Balance delivery responsibilities with advisory leadership and innovation responsibilities across multiple concurrent projects.
- Prioritise work effectively, particularly under tight or critical timelines.
- Foster cohesion and collaboration across functions, disciplines, and project teams.
Communication & Client Engagement
- Communicate complex statistical concepts clearly to internal teams and clients.
- Act as the statistical point of contact for clients, ensuring clarity around methods, assumptions, limitations, and results.
- Support client discussions and meetings by providing specialist input on statistical aspects of projects.
Project Management
- Operate as the technical counterpart to the project manager on relevant projects, internally managing teams when allocated to projects in a management capacity.
- Coordinate analytical tasks within project teams, ensuring appropriate delegation, documentation, quality control, and timely delivery.
- Support project planning by advising on analytical scope, resourcing, risks, budgets, and constraints.
Research and Evidence
- Ensure analyses are grounded in appropriate evidence, best practice methodologies, and current statistical standards.
- Keep abreast of developments in statistical research and translate relevant advances into project work and internal practice.
- Contribute to the development of publication plans and research outputs, including project-based and methodological publications.
Data Analysis & Interpretation
- Lead or support the delivery of complex statistical analyses, including hands‑on delivery where this improves quality or accelerates timelines.
- Provide analytical leadership on projects requiring advanced or innovative methods.
- Maintain oversight of statistical components across live projects, intervening when required to ensure consistency and technical excellence.
Writing, Storytelling & Deliverables
- Guide the production of high‑quality statistical outputs that align with strategic objectives.
- Develop and refine templates, QC processes, and standard deliverables to improve clarity, efficiency, and consistency.
- Support the creation of a range of outputs, including technical reports, publications, and externally facing content.
Innovation
- Work with the Innovation team to identify new avenues for innovation, particularly in the statistical realm.
- Support and lead on projects that drive the business forward with regards to innovation, ensuring the use of cutting‑edge techniques and methodologies.
Business Development
- Provide methodological input and budget support for proposals and bids involving statistical components.
- Support accurate scoping of timelines, resources, and costs for statistical work in the pipeline.
- Ensure proposals accurately reflect appropriate methodologies and the capabilities of the team.
People Leadership
- Mentor and manage junior team members, supporting their technical development and growth, particularly in statistics.
- Provide on‑project coaching and training to upskill team members.
- Work with Learning & Development to identify skills gaps and design and deliver technical training programmes.
- Actively maintain and develop own expertise through training, networking, and engagement with internal and external experts.
Career Development
- Set technical direction and standards across multiple projects and workstreams.
- Develop deeper client‑facing credibility, increasingly representing the business as a senior technical authority.
- Deliver sustained high‑impact, complex work with minimal oversight.

Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Degree‑level qualification (2.1 or above preferred) in a health‑related, analytical, or numerical scientific discipline such as Health Economics, Public Health, Maths, Medical Statistics, Biostatistics, Statistics, Econometrics, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering, Operational Research.
- Advanced degree (MSc, MRes, MBA, PhD) strongly preferred in Health Economics, Biostatistics / Medical Statistics, Epidemiology, Mathematics / Econometrics, or other analytical, quantitative, or health‑related disciplines.
Skills & Capabilities
- Extensive experience within outcomes research and a solid understanding of other service areas.
- High proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, with proven ability to review and refine others’ work.
- Practical knowledge and proven ability in network meta‑analysis, pairwise meta‑analysis, indirect treatment comparison, survival analysis and extrapolations, health state utilities analysis, and within‑trial patient‑level data analysis.
- Experience providing statistical guidance to project teams, ensuring analyses withstand critique from the health economics and scientific community.
- Evidence of a high level of proficiency in reviewing and guiding the development of feasibility assessments, statistical analysis plans, conducting analyses and reporting.
- Experience across a broad range of treatment types and disease areas.
- Excellent statistical coding skills using R or other appropriate statistical software.
- Excellent IT and numerical skills including proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and facilitation skills.
