Principal Electrical Engineer – Industry

WSP’s Industry team is looking for a Principal‑level Electrical Engineer to lead electrical design and discipline management on process industry projects, including pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, emerging hydrogen, battery, and other plant projects. The role involves working from concept to construction completion, delivering detailed electrical design, estimates, and proposals.

  • Report directly to the Industry Engineering Director and perform hands‑on project work as well as discipline and line management responsibilities.
  • Lead a small team of Electrical Engineers within the industry discipline, fostering a collaborative and safety‑centric culture.
  • Provide CAD support and engineering assistance within the department.
  • Work across multiple industry sectors, collaborating with other divisions in the UK and abroad.
  • Engage with high‑profile COMAH sites, delivering design solutions for hazardous environments.
  • Lead electrical discipline, including line management of the sub‑team.
  • Input to schedule, man‑hour estimates, control, and monitoring.
  • Control discipline hours budget and cost of works on allocated projects.
  • Carry out electrical design work from 11 kV substations through LV switchboards, distribution, MCCs, lighting, small power, lightning protection, and associated services such as fire alarms and PA systems.
  • Prepare installation specifications and contract schedules.
  • Lead CAD team in production of electrical drawings; approve and check all electrical design work on allocated projects.
  • Prepare inquiry responses and technical bid analysis.
  • Provide technical liaison with suppliers, package vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Prepare design safety reviews and designers’ risk assessments.

Essential Qualifications

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team; versatile, reliable, and resourceful.
  • Customer focus, commitment to quality management, and problem‑solving ability.
  • Experience of 11 kV/LV electrical engineering design on capital projects.
  • Experience of motor controls, including variable speed drives.
  • Experience of electrical design in ATEX hazardous areas.
  • Ability to travel within the UK for site and supplier visits.
  • Degree‑qualified, Chartered Engineer in electrical engineering or equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in the design of one or more of our key sectors.
  • CompEx 12 qualification.
  • Experience of 11 kV/LV fault‑level calculations and protection studies.
  • Experience working within a contracting organisation.
