Location
We are recruiting an experienced Quarry Manager to lead our friendly operations team at Tarmac Ballidon Quarry near Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The site is accessible from Wirksworth, Matlock, Carsington, Buxton, Bakewell, Derby, Chesterfield, Burton‑upon‑Trent and surrounding areas.
Responsibilities
- Manage and be accountable for all operations on the quarry.
- Maintain safety and operational standards, cost control, people management, delivery to customer needs, and performance improvement.
- Manage, coach and develop a highly skilled, fit‑for‑purpose and extremely motivated team to ensure business continuity and reduce business risk.
- Lead change and continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining disciplined stock‑management processes and producing operational reports.
- Understand different methods of winning and extracting raw material.
- Know techniques for loading extracted minerals and viable options to transport them, including feeding, crushing, screening, washing, separation, classification and beneficiation.
- Apply Quarry Regulations 1999 and enable a Reg 8.1d appointment.
- Handle all aspects of budgetary control for the plant.
- Maintain and implement existing and new Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and train staff accordingly.
- Oversee the safe operation of the plant and planned preventive maintenance of all equipment, fixed and mobile, and be responsible for your safety and that of colleagues and business partners.
- Report and investigate any unsafe or hazardous working practices.
- Issue safety briefings and toolbox talks to the operational team.
- Proactively manage mandatory and developmental training of staff and maintain an up‑to‑date training matrix.
- Collate and report on monthly performance KPIs for the business unit and drive operational performance through KPIs.
- Ensure appropriate contractor and visitor inductions are carried out in line with company procedures.
- Lead collaboration between the site‑based crushing, load‑and‑haul, asphalt and maintenance teams within the operation.
This is a Monday‑to‑Friday role, but flexibility is required to meet plant and customer needs.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in quarrying or asphalt operations.
- Diploma in Quarry Technology or FdSc Extractives Technology.
- SHE NVQ Level 4 or QCF Level 6.
- IOSH or NEBOSH (advantageous).
- Geotechnical Level 4 (advantageous).
- Full knowledge of risk assessments and safe system of work.
- Working knowledge of production processes, health & safety and environmental policies.
- Strong IT skills including SAP and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to multitask and manage change.
