Research Officer – Respiratory Biobank

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Research Officer to support the Cardiff and Vale Research Delivery Team with the Respiratory Biobank. The post holder will work closely with respiratory colleagues at the All-Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre and with biobank teams at Cardiff University and other identified clinical areas in UHW. Responsibilities include approaching patients, obtaining informed consent, and collecting biobank samples to support clinical trials and biobanking capabilities. This patient-facing role spans multiple clinical areas in UHL and UHW and requires excellent communication and organisational skills.

Main Duties of the Job

This is a fixed‑term/secondment position for 2 years from the commencement date. The post is at 0.5 WTE (18.75 hours per week), with working days and hours to be negotiated on appointment. The post holder will attend morning clinics on Monday and possibly Tuesday in UHL. The role is supported by VPAG funding to expand capacity for commercial and non-commercial clinical trials, and to enhance biobank offerings. It provides patients with opportunities to participate in trials and access innovative treatments.

The NHS R&D Departments, led by a R&D Director, provide local research support and facilitate the hosting of studies within each UHB. The Research Officer will be part of this NHS research delivery team, working alongside Research Nurses, Research Officers and Administrators.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Health‑related degree or Allied Health Professional
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Ability to make independent decisions
  • Knowledge of clinical and/or research terminology

Experience

  • Evidence of previous patient/client and multidisciplinary team contact in a work environment
  • Clinical experience gained within the NHS
  • Proven record of meeting targets
  • Experience of undertaking clinical research

Skills

  • Ability to communicate complex information to patients, carers and members of the MDT
  • Team player who can also work independently
  • Well organised and able to plan own workload

Personal Qualities

  • Positive attitude and respect for others
  • Drive, enthusiasm and commitment to the organisation
