Staff Nurse – Ward 16

Ward 16 is a 22 bedded unit which consists of a Short Stay Medical Unit. We are a dedicated team striving to provide a high standard of care to our patient group.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a caring and motivated individual to work within our team. We are looking for a dynamic hard working Staff Nurse to join Ward 16’s team. If you enjoy working in a busy acute medical environment this job will be of a personal interest to you.

Training will be provided with reference to any specific requirements within our speciality, such as DKA, infectious diseases, learning criteria for short stay patients to admit and focus on 72 hour discharges.

Main duties of the job

  • To support leadership on managing the unit as a senior staff nurse through shifts and delegates tasks to support staff.
  • To adhere to the infection and prevention control guidance and policies of each infectious disease.
  • Able to undertake the assessment and management of patients in a safe effective, timely and appropriate manner to maximize patient wellbeing.
  • Evaluates processes and progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
  • Being accountable for patient which is assigned on the shift through documentation.
  • Working in an MDT with health and medical professional to support and advocate patients getting the best treatment and prevent delays.
  • Undertakes role as a mentor to support junior colleagues and students on education.
  • Maintains trust policies and procedures with up-to-date training such as GDPR, BLS, Safeguarding.
  • Documents care in a clear, complete and concise manner in accordance to the trust policy.
  • Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates principles of time management into shift routine.
  • Appropriately assesses the patient’s pain and involves the patient in effective management of that pain using appropriate interventions.
  • Assess and coordinate patient’s discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.
  • Interacts with family and patient in sharing care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge and informs patient and family of hospital procedures.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Experience and Knowledge

  • Broad clinical knowledge base
  • Short Stay/Acute Medicine knowledge
  • Optiflow/NIV trained
  • Infection Control knowledge

Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service across the full shift pattern, including weekends, bank holidays and night duties
  • Optiflow/NIV
