Job overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Medical Technologist to join the Technical Services team. The role involves maintaining, repairing, and supporting life‑supporting respiratory and ventilation equipment used across hospital wards, satellite units, and patients’ homes.

The post requires hands‑on technical expertise at system, component, and circuit level, including electronic fault‑finding, repair, modification, and soldering, to ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and compliant with regulatory and manufacturer standards.

Excellent communication skills are essential. You will work closely with patients and a multidisciplinary team, including consultants, nurses, and physiotherapists, providing clear technical advice and supporting the safe clinical use of complex medical devices.

The role includes community and multi‑site working; therefore a full UK driving licence is required.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Service, fault‑find, and repair respiratory and ventilation equipment at system and component/circuit level, including electronic diagnostics and soldering.
  • Ensure equipment is safe, tested, and compliant with Trust, manufacturer, and medical device regulations.
  • Maintain and calibrate test equipment and records.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota, supporting hospital and community patients.
  • Install and maintain equipment across sites and in patients’ homes, using Trust vehicles; full UK driving licence required.
  • Provide technical advice and training to healthcare professionals, patients, families, and carers.
  • Support equipment trials, service improvement, and training of junior staff and trainees (including Annex 21).
  • Ensure safe handling and decontamination of equipment in line with infection control policies.

Essential requirements

  • Relevant science or engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Component‑level electronic fault‑finding and repair skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, with interest in respiratory technology.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable skills

  • Experience with medical devices (especially ventilators).
  • Experience delivering training.
  • Knowledge of NHS policies, on‑call services, and RCT eligibility.

Benefits and working conditions

Core service hours are 9am‑5pm, Monday to Friday, with 24/7 technical cover provided via an on‑call rota to support patients and clinical teams.

Organisational values

  • Caring – putting patients first through compassionate, respectful, person‑centred care.
  • Ambitious – striving for excellence through innovation, integrity, and continuous improvement.
  • Inclusive – working collaboratively, valuing diversity, and fostering an inclusive, anti‑racist culture.
