Clinical Theatre Manager

Clinical Theatre Manager, Coastguard and Horizon Theatres (Band 7).

The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is the South West’s regional paediatric major trauma centre. We have 9 theatres covering 18 specialities including Cardiac, Neuro, Trauma, Burns, CEPOD and Plastics.

Coastguard and Horizon Theatres are looking for a RN/ODP who would like an opportunity to lead and support a developing team within BRHC. This will involve working closely with the Theatre Matron and other unit theatre leads. The ability to combine your clinical expertise with managerial responsibilities is essential; experience of practising within an operating theatre will be advantageous. You will hold relevant qualifications and have sufficient experience to provide strong, knowledgeable leadership.

Weston Theatres consists of 6 operating theatres with a range of specialities including: Day surgeries, Upper GI, Lower GI, Orthopaedics, a designated CEPOD list and more.

You will require a high level of organisational skill and have a resourceful and professional approach to work. You should be able to demonstrate excellent inter-personal and communication skills and have the ability to forge and maintain positive relationships with a variety of clinical and non-clinical staff.

The working hours are full time (37.5) – Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

The lead practitioner is accountable and responsible for the twenty four hour care delivery and management of the department. The lead practitioner will promote and monitor safe and effective practice, enhance the patient experience, provide effective leadership and management and contribute to the delivery of the Trust/Divisional objectives.

  • Be supervisory to practice as required.
  • Be responsible for professional day to day clinical leadership and operational management of the department.
  • Ensure delivery of high quality, responsive, safe, efficient and compassionate care.
  • Support the Matron in developing the service.
  • Act as a leader and role model, adopting a flexible approach in a role which encompasses leadership, management and clinical responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate pride in their work and enthusiasm for quality of care.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Thorough and up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within speciality area.
  • Significant relevant clinical and management experience.
  • Able to lead and manage the nursing team: effective standard setting, monitoring and feedback; understanding of the principles and application of effective budgetary management; understanding of the principles and application of effective staff and HR management/appraisals; understanding the theory and application of clinical governance.
  • Understanding of NMC/HCPA Code of Practice and its application to the management of staff and self.
  • Experience and knowledge of advanced practice/protocols.

Skills and Abilities

  • Highly effective communication skills – verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict or distress.
  • Able to gain credibility with and influence colleagues including influencing clinical changes where appropriate.
  • Strong organisational skills – prioritising complex situations.

Qualifications and Training

  • Current NMC/HCPC Registration.
  • First degree in nursing or health related topic or willingness to work towards.
  • Qualification in Teaching, Assessing and Mentoring.
  • Evidence of Masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters (in relevant health related subject).
  • Non-Medical Prescribing.
