Metrology Engineer – Dimensional Inspection

Location: RG30 3RR (between Reading and Basingstoke). Site base: AWE Burghfield. Closing date: 10 June 2026. Salary: £30,750 – £58,920 per annum. Working pattern: 9-day working fortnight with flexible working options.

We are recruiting a specialist in dimensional inspection to join a team developing inspection processes for nuclear weapon products. All training and career development to professional metrologist are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Work with product development teams to identify metrology methods suitable for product verification.
  • Evaluate inspection technologies and select the most appropriate.
  • Develop and implement dimensional inspection methods and processes.
  • Apply inspection quality tools and techniques in workshop settings.
  • Set up components/assemblies for inspection using appropriate equipment.
  • Apply basic measurement uncertainty analysis and interpret engineering drawings (GD&T) and technical specifications.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Quindos and/or PC-DMIS programming software; CMM technology experience is also acceptable.
  • Measurement from first principles using manual instruments.
  • Defining measurement processes and conducting inspections of first articles or one-off components.
  • Experience with surface metrology evaluation using tactile or optical instruments.
  • Experience introducing new metrology/inspection equipment.
  • Conducted Measurement System Analysis studies.
  • Background in high-precision manufacturing (e.g., machining).
  • Basic knowledge of problem‑resolution and continuous improvement tools (Yellow or Green Belt accredited).
  • Understanding of practical 6-sigma methodology.
  • Strong calibration, documentation and data‑analysis skills.
  • Ability to work calmly in a dynamic priority environment, manage workload, and meet tight deadlines.
