About the role

In this role, you will act as the first point of contact, manage complex and sensitive casework from the initial death report, collate reports, prepare inquest files, liaise with professionals, and support HM Coroner to make informed decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare files and manage statutory obligations, ensuring timely progress of casework.
  • Receive death reports and conduct enquiries, gathering information to support judicial decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate computer records, retrieve and update information, and manage workflow.
  • Coordinate and manage workload of assigned cases, generate and distribute paperwork, and monitor progress to ensure timely completion.
  • Consult with medical professionals regarding causes of death, MCCD issuance, and further investigations.
  • Arrange post-mortem examinations, briefing pathologists, and represent HM Coroner as required.
  • Maintain contact with bereaved families and other parties, providing accurate information and advice.
  • Handle incoming calls and correspondence, liaise with doctors, pathologists, mortuary staff, funeral directors, and registrars, and maintain secure records.
  • Prepare inquest files for review by HM Coroner and court use, pursue missing information to aid timely hearing of inquests.
  • Participate in out-of-hours rota, filter incoming calls, and determine escalation to Senior Coroner as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and council corporate policy for personal and employee wellbeing.

Qualifications

Required skills and attributes include excellent communication, positive teamwork ethic, meticulous attention to detail, resilience to work in fast‑paced environment, strong organisational and ICT skills, ability to prioritise competing demands, and emotional resilience.
