Job Summary

The Senior Maintenance Technician leads maintenance activities to ensure manufacturing, laboratory, and support equipment operate reliably, safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements. This role provides day‑to‑day supervision and technical guidance to technicians, supports equipment calibrations, coordinates preventive maintenance (PM) programs, responds to breakdowns, and prioritises workload to maximise uptime and continuous improvement within a regulated medical device environment.

Location & Working Pattern

Primary working area: Keele office and production facilities. Occasional visits to the Trentham facility. Standard working hours Monday‑Friday 8am‑4pm with flexibility; occasional overtime required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and provide technical direction to maintenance technicians.
  • Support the Calibration Engineer with calibration activities, documentation, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure manufacturing, laboratory, and facility equipment remain safe, compliant and operational.
  • Plan, schedule and oversee preventive maintenance activities, ensuring timely completion.
  • Coordinate and lead response to equipment breakdowns, troubleshoot issues, prioritise workload and minimise downtime.
  • Assign and balance maintenance workload based on operational priorities, resources and risk.
  • Review and approve maintenance and calibration records, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance.
  • Support root‑cause investigations for equipment failures and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality and Facilities to support equipment performance, upgrades and improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and site procedures.
  • Support audits by providing maintenance and calibration documentation and technical input.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance effectiveness, reliability and efficiency through continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Requirements

  • Formal training in industrial maintenance, equipment troubleshooting or reliability practices.
  • Training in health and safety, risk assessment and safe systems of work.
  • Industrial Maintenance Technology Diploma (or equivalent).
  • Extensive hands‑on experience in equipment maintenance in a regulated manufacturing environment, preferably medical devices or pharmaceuticals.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting and resolving time‑critical breakdowns.
  • Knowledge of LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out) procedures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of manufacturing and laboratory equipment maintenance.
  • Solid understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance principles.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands effectively.
  • Strong leadership and team‑management capability.
  • Proactive, organised and methodical approach to work.
  • High sense of accountability and ownership for equipment performance.
  • Calm and decisive under pressure, especially during breakdown situations.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.

  • Willingness to support shift work, on‑call duties or out‑of‑hours breakdown response as required.

  • Compliance with all company policies, quality system requirements and health and safety procedures.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical device manufacturing regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO 13485).
  • Leadership or supervisory training.
  • Training in Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff or other motion control systems.
  • Qualification in IET Wiring Regulations 18 Edition / A4: 2026 Edition.
  • PUWER training.
  • PLC fault‑finding skills (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff).
  • Experience with AC inverter drives, servo drives and robotics.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of CMMS or maintenance planning systems.
  • Ability to interpret equipment manuals, schematics and technical documentation.
