Role Overview

The role of the Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care department is to facilitate a safe, person-centred and confidential service of spiritual and religious care that enables patients, their families and friends and members of staff to explore and negotiate their experience of life, illness, injury, loss or stress so that they can begin to find strength, support and meaning within it.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for the spiritual, pastoral and faith care needs of patients and staff within Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, and be a collaborative member of the chaplaincy team in delivering person-centred spiritual and pastoral care to all patients, visitors and staff, irrespective of their religion or belief.

They will significantly contribute collaboratively to an effective Chaplaincy department, including education and training within the hospital.

Other duties include:

  • Participate in the provision of the 24-hour on-call service, providing emergency pastoral and spiritual care and facilitating religious care.
  • Provide and/or facilitate religious care.
  • Attendance at either hospital within the one-hour on-call standard.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with the out-of-hours rota.
  • Have own transport and be prepared and able to travel trust wide.

Qualifications and Training

  • Recognised (Ordained/licensed) and in current good standing with own Faith, Belief or Community.
  • Educated to university degree level – or equivalent experience that embraces theological or philosophical understanding or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Faith and Belief systems to work in a multi-cultural/multi-faith context.
  • Further studies relating to chaplaincy/counselling/pastoral care.
  • Current membership in UKBHC.

Experience

  • Substantial experience of providing pastoral/spiritual care within your own belief group or faith community.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering effective training and education relating to pastoral and spiritual care.
  • Substantial ministerial/faith or belief group leadership experience following training and subsequent ordination (if ordination is applicable), or equivalent.
  • Experience of delivering pastoral, spiritual and religious care in a health care setting.
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Experience of working with people following trauma, life-changing injury, illness and end of life.
  • Experience of supporting bereaved parents and arranging/conducting funerals.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Theoretical knowledge on ethical issues relating to healthcare.
  • Good IT skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and ability to learn patient management systems quickly.

  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative.
