Role Overview

Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners’ lives. They act as peacekeepers, counsellors and teachers, working varied shifts including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Eligibility & Requirements

• At least 18 years old at the point you commence employment
• Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (see below)
• Pass a medical and fitness assessment as part of the application process
• Meet the required eyesight standard with and without corrective lenses
• Have suitable hearing (without hearing aids)
• Tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not accepted unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons

Nationality Requirements

• Nationals of the Republic of Ireland
• Nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK
• Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities with settled or pre‑settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS)
• Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities who have made a valid application for settled or pre‑settled status under the EUSS
• Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
• Turkish nationals, and certain family members of Turkish nationals, who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service

Pay

• 37 hours a week = £37,246 a year
• 39 hours a week = £39,375 a year
• 41 hours a week = £41,503 a year
