Prison Officer – HMP Swinfen Hall

Responsibilities

Prison officers protect the public and support prisoners’ rehabilitation. In this role you will perform a range of duties, including:

  • Maintaining security and order within the prison environment.
  • Providing support and guidance to prisoners, including counselling and teaching roles.
  • Working as part of a team to ensure safety for staff and visitors.
  • Covering various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Requirements

To become a prison officer, you will need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Meet the Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including an eyesight test, hearing test and basic health screening.
  • Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes, with and without corrective lenses.
  • Have suitable hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
  • Maintain an appropriate standard of hearing and not have offensive or intimidating visible tattoos. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
  • For high‑security (category A) prisons, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
  • Be legally eligible to live and work in the UK and in the Civil Service.

Nationality requirements

  • Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
  • Nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK.
  • Nationals of EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and their family members who have applied for settled or pre‑settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
  • Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020.
  • Turkish nationals and certain family members of Turkish nationals who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service.

Pay and Benefits

The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you may work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours.

  • 37 hours a week: £33,746 per year.
  • 39 hours a week: £35,875 per year.
  • 41 hours a week: £38,003 per year.

Travel to Work

Some prison establishments are situated in rural locations with limited public transport options. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential unless specified. You are responsible for getting to and from your workplace on time for the start of your shift.
