Senior Manager – Technical Accounting Policy

Monzo, a UK‑based digital bank, is looking for an experienced professional to lead our technical accounting policy function for our Group, UK and EU regulated entities. The role sits at the intersection of finance and commercial growth, acting as the primary technical interface for the business, assessing new commercial proposals and triaging work across the wider finance team.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on complex accounting issues such as revenue recognition, leasing and financial instruments and document conclusions in technical memos.
  • Develop and maintain global accounting policies, ensuring consistency across the organisation and compliance with updated IFRS standards.
  • Lead projects for the adoption of new accounting standards.
  • Partner with commercial and product teams to evaluate the accounting implications of new products, lending propositions and complex transactions prior to launch.
  • Manage the intake of technical queries, strategically triage and delegate project components to utilise and develop the technical capabilities of the wider finance team.
  • Establish, coordinate and chair an internal technical accounting forum to debate, align and secure sign‑off on areas of accounting estimates and judgments, as well as new policy and standards.
  • Act as the dedicated technical accounting partner to the business, translating complex technical standards into actionable business advice.
  • Lead the technical dialogue with external auditors, authoring robust accounting papers to justify and defend Monzo’s reported positions.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, external auditors and advisors.

Qualifications and experience

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CPA) with 5+ years of experience in accounting policy, technical accounting or Big‑4 accounting advisory.
  • Strong, hands‑on knowledge of IFRS, particularly IFRS 9.
  • Preferred: Proven track record within a banking institution or a Big‑4 banking/financial services advisory practice.
  • Demonstrated collaborative leadership and experience managing workloads across a team, utilising external skill sets.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to facilitate technical debate and drive alignment among senior leaders and cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills, able to translate technical standards into clear, professional guidance for non‑finance stakeholders.
  • Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills to triage proposals and maximise the capabilities of the wider team.
  • Resilience and flexibility – ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, tech‑led, agile environment.
