This post is to support our specialist Gastroenterology service based here at Northampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to provide a comprehensive service and will help develop this service, as well as being an active member of the wider Gastroenterology team.

The successful applicant will join seven substantive consultants, based at Northampton General Hospital, delivering high quality elective and emergency gastroenterology services to the local catchment area. The role will contribute to inpatient and outpatient services, endoscopy provision, and the development of specialist services aligned to departmental and Trust priorities.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive Gastroenterology service at Northampton General Hospital.

To provide specialist Gastroenterology services whilst also contributing to the general Gastroenterology service provision, including inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services.

Demonstrate proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (including upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy). A commitment to high-quality endoscopic practice, service improvement, and training is essential.

Participate in the Gastroenterology on-call rota. The current on-call commitment includes provision of advice and support for emergency Gastroenterology and GI bleed services, with arrangements in line with departmental policy.

Carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme and in the teaching of Gastroenterology trainees within the department.

Contribute to the teaching and training of other healthcare professionals both within the department and elsewhere within the Trust as appropriate.

Regularly attend and participate in departmental educational meetings, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and governance sessions.

Play an active role in the robust clinical audit programme in operation within the department and take part in regional and national audits as required.

Report all critical incidents and attend and support departmental audit and clinical governance meetings.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

  • FRCOph or equivalent
  • Completion of specialty training (or within 6 months of AAC)
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • MD, PhD or other higher degree
  • Education / Medical Education Qualification (preferably at Masters level)

Teaching and audit

  • Experience of Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Experience of Teaching Junior Staff
  • Experience of Undergraduate Teaching
  • Experience in Curriculum development and delivery

Academic Achievements and Research

  • A specialist interest in a specialist area to complement the other consultants in the department
  • Publications in recognised journals

Interpersonal skills
