We are recruiting for a full-time Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities to join our North and West Oxfordshire Learning Disability Service based in Banbury.
You will work closely with an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and physiotherapy colleagues. The role offers a varied and fulfilling caseload, supporting adults with learning disabilities who may also experience mental illness, autism or epilepsy, and working in partnership with families, carers, primary care and social services.
Main duties of the job
- Assess and treat out-patients with a learning disability and/or co‑morbid mental illness, autistic spectrum disorders or epilepsy. You will have responsibility for the patients you see, as well as for those patients seen by medical staff whom you directly supervise.
- Support the care of adults with a learning disability by developing strong partnership with other agencies and services, including social care, primary care and voluntary agencies.
- Work alongside the clinical supervisor and multidisciplinary team to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service.
- Engage with 1 hour per week clinical supervision in line with the trust supervision policy.
- Contribute to CPA, professionals or multidisciplinary meetings for those patients under your care.
- Provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system.
- On‑call duties across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire – candidates must have sufficient mobility and access to reliable transport to fulfil the requirements of the role.

- At least four years’ full‑time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a speciality training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed‑term speciality trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable
- Attendance at MRCPsych course or equivalent Section 12 (2) approval: Mental Health Act 1983.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Held hospital appointments in psychiatry at CT or equivalent level
Desirable
- Experience at ST or SD level or equivalent
