Senior Pharmacy Technician: Cancer Services

Main duties of the job
As a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician within Cancer Services at Guy’s Hospital, you will play a key role in delivering a safe, high quality, and patient centred pharmaceutical service to patients admitted to the inpatient cancer wards.
Working closely with pharmacists, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure patients receive safe, effective, and timely medicines support throughout their inpatient stay, contributing directly to improved patient outcomes, patient experience, and medicines safety.
You will support the delivery and ongoing development of ward based medicines management services across inpatient oncology and haematology areas. Responsibilities include medicines reconciliation, assessing and managing patients’ own medicines, counselling patients, facilitating timely discharge processes, and ensuring seamless transitions of care.
A key aspect of the role is contributing to service improvement initiatives that enhance the quality, efficiency, and safety of pharmacy services within Cancer Services.
Job responsibilities
Patient Centred Medicines Management
- Provide ward based medicines management services, including medicine reconciliation, discharge planning, and patient and carer counselling.
- Act as a key link between ward teams and pharmacy services, helping to resolve medicines related issues and optimise the patient experience.
- Ensure the safe, effective, and timely supply of medicines to patients across the inpatient cancer wards at Guy’s Hospital.
Dispensing and Medicines Safety
- Undertake dispensing, final accuracy checking (as an Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician), and issuing of medicines to maintain a safe and efficient service.
- Complete medication storage audits, including Controlled Drug audits, stock reconciliation, and expiry checks, reporting any discrepancies promptly.
- Develop and maintain a safe, efficient, and cost-effective medicines supply service to patients.
Teamwork, Training, and Development
- Work collaboratively with nursing, medical, and pharmacy colleagues within the inpatient cancer ward teams as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development projects.
- Support the training and supervision of rotational pharmacy staff and trainees, contributing to a culture of continuous learning.
You will work in a structured environment providing support to the wider team to meet key directorates targets. This will include delivering pharmacy services to a range of patients with complex cancer conditions, supporting and training junior staff.
Candidates should have demonstrable competencies in hospital clinical pharmacy practice, excellent communication skills and commitment to pharmaceutical care. Furthermore candidates should be highly organised.
Person Specification
Knowledge/Qualifications
- NVQ L3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) plus L3 QCF Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science or GPhC accredited equivalent or GPhC equivalents prior to July 2011
- Completion of the Accreditation Checking Pharmacy Technician Scheme (ACPT)
- Registration or eligible to join as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- A1 workplace Assessor or working towards Practice Supervisor, Train the trainer or equivalent qualification
- Medicine Management Accreditation or equivalent
Experience
- Have worked in a role with clinical ward based team and medicines management responsibilities
- Previous experience of delivering induction and competency based training
- Previous experience of supervising staff and workload on a day-to-day basis
- Previous evaluated experience of participation in project and audit work
- Demonstrated experience of ability to appraise staff and set performance objectives
- Previous evaluated experience of recruitment and selection of staff
Skills
- Demonstrated ability to counsel and give advice to patients on their medications
- Demonstrated ability to accurately judge and assess patient’s own medication
- Demonstrated ability to accurately record patient medicine reconciliation
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise and organise routine daily tasks using own initiative, whilst supervising and leading a team
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure accurately
- Demonstrated ability to clearly and accurately complete complex routine and non-routine documentation.
- Demonstrated effective customer service skills.
- Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the context of hospital pharmacy and the NHS.
- Mandatory professional CPD as defined by General Pharmaceutical Council
- Demonstrated ability to write SOP’s
