Role Overview

We’re looking for a practical, hands‑on Maintenance Operative to join our team at Biffa in Thurrock. The successful candidate will inspect and repair trade waste bins, carry out cleaning, use power tools and basic welding, load/unload bins with a forklift (if qualified), maintain a tidy workshop, follow health and safety procedures and work well both independently and as part of a small, friendly team.

Hours & Compensation

Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 16:30 (45 hours per week). Pay: £15.21 per hour + monthly allowance. Annual salary approximately £35,591, including allowance.

Core Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair and maintain trade waste bins to company standards, including replacing lids, wheels and other parts.
  • Carry out regular washing and cleaning of various sized wheeled containers.
  • Use power tools and equipment safely and correctly to complete repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform basic welding tasks where required (training can be provided).
  • Maintain a clean and organised workshop and yard area through good housekeeping practices.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines in a physically demanding role.
  • Work well independently and as part of a small, hands‑on maintenance team.
  • Be flexible, self‑motivated and able to follow both verbal and written instructions accurately.

Requirements

  • Previous experience within a workshop environment.
  • Previous experience of working in a production‑targeted environment.
  • Previous experience of using air tools and power tools in a workshop environment.
