Higher Security Officer

ChoiceFacilities Services are seeking a passionate, hardworking and reliable individual to join our team and fulfil the role of a Higher Security Officer.
The role of a Higher Security Officer is an exciting opportunity for people who are motivated, flexible, task focused and have excellent communication skills. Choice offers full on‑the‑job training and support for career progression.
As a Higher Security Officer, you will work at the new Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital, assisting in the protection of patients, staff, visitors and the hospital building. The post holder must hold a valid Security Industry Authority licence.

Main duties of the job
- Respond to requests from wards and departments for support in handling violent or potential violent incidents, including scenarios where individuals fear physical harm, scenes of actual or suspected crime involving personal injury, or a crime in progress.
- Monitor CCTV, answer queries from the public, staff and key management.
- Proactively patrol internal and external sites, securing buildings.
- Provide information and assistance to staff, patients and visitors on security.
- Assist in the prevention of crime.
- Respond to emergency incidents including fire.
- Perform general car parking duties.
- Assist in the vision to create a safe place to work, visit and stay.
Work schedule: 20 hours per week, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night shifts only (7 pm to 7 am). 1 week on and 1 week off (unless covering absence).

Job responsibilities
The post holder will work as a member of the security team within Sunderland Royal Hospital to assist in protecting patients, staff and visitors. The role is similar to that described in “Main duties”.
Person Specification
Experience
- Experience of conflict management, violence and aggression.
- Experience working within an NHS setting.
Skills and Knowledge
- Negotiation and calming skills to de‑escalate violent or potentially violent situations.
- Communication skills required when answering the phone or using two‑way radios.
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Ability to use initiative when faced with an emergency situation.
- Basic IT/keyboard skills to document daily logs and use the CCTV system.
- Customer‑focused, particularly towards patients and visitors.
Physical skills
- Moving and handling.
- Ability to undertake control and restraint training to restrain individuals for prolonged periods.
- Ability to sit at workstations as required for CCTV monitoring.
Qualifications
- Basic numeracy and literacy education.
- Class B driving licence.
- Hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) door supervisor licence, renewed and revalidated every 3 years.
- Hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) CCTV operator licence, renewed and revalidated every 3 years.
- Literacy level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C).
- Numeracy level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C).
- Conflict resolution / physical intervention training.
