Barking and Dagenham College have a very busy Estates & Facilities Team, and we are looking for an energetic and pro‑active College Caretaker to join our team.
You will join us on a full‑time, 38 hours per week, permanent basis. In return we offer a competitive salary of £27,893 – £28,657 pa inc London Weighting.
The College Caretaker role
To maintain the cleanliness, security and safety of the premises, and the security and safety of college staff, students and visitors.
Assist in the day‑to‑day operational activities of estates maintenance across all college sites.
Key Responsibilities of our College Caretaker
- To operate on a 3‑shift pattern; 06.30am‑14.30pm / 11am‑7pm / 2.30pm‑10.30pm
- Early shift is onsite at 6:30am – one hour to ready the building
- Daily tasks include, but are not restricted to – porterage, undertaking minor painting and decorating, carpet tiling, room reconfigurations
- Estates helpdesk; intermediate IT skills required – managing helpdesk tickets and emailing communications.
- Set intruder alarms across the campus for nightly lock‑up – this is a highly critical role for attention to security and safety.
- Use initiative to prioritise, respond to changing needs and work safely in line with health and safety
- Log and report any breakages or damage to any item and carry out repairs and maintenance work to a safe standard.
- Carry out routine administrative tasks, as required.
Our ideal College Caretaker
- Educated up to GCSE Grade C/5 or equivalent (E)
- Awareness of COSHH regulations (E)
- Full driving licence (E)
- Experience of building trades and all round practical experience (E)
- Good organisational skills, including the ability to adapt to changing workload demands and new workplace challenges (E)
- Basic knowledge of maintenance logging systems and basic IT (D)
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions (E)
- Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and standards (E)
Other Information
The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020.
