The role involves conducting planned and reactionary maintenance and intervention tasks on all plant and equipment that make up the baggage systems at Gatwick Airport. It is shift‑based, includes night and weekend work, and is critical to supporting the Baggage operations. Key assets include Complex Conveyor Systems, Sortation Machines, Carousels, Scanners, PLCs and IT‑based Control Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake planned preventative/corrective maintenance, mindful of asset performance and operational requirements.
  • Ensure all engineering and operational records are updated to meet business, regulatory and manufacturer requirements.
  • Pro‑actively undertake and support performance improvement activities and programmes.
  • Take responsibility for safety, including wearing PPE, completing mandatory training and reporting accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Use GAL IT systems (Ultimo, MyHub, P2W, Microsoft Office) as required.
  • Develop skills and knowledge to maintain and operate existing and new assets to maintain performance at a required level.
  • Undertake role‑specific training required for the role.
  • Work in passenger‑facing areas as well as back‑of‑house areas across the airport campus.
  • Work collaboratively; the role has no direct reports.

Qualifications

  • Advanced modern apprenticeship (Mechanical, Electrical or Electronic) or equivalent.
  • Core skill/bias of Electrical/Mechanical Engineering to at least ONC level (Level 3).
  • Technical experience working in a maintenance environment.
  • Ability to understand and interpret electrical and mechanical schematic drawings.
  • Proven experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Able to carry out system performance improvements.
  • Knowledgeable of 17th Edition IEE wiring regulations.
  • Owner of a driving licence.
