Principal Designer – Whitehaven

We are currently looking for a Principal Designer to join the team based in Whitehaven.

The successful candidate will support the Responsible Engineer by producing technical packages for the Analytical Services Portfolio. The role requires being part of a Civil & Structural Engineering team in the definition, implementation, and delivery of engineering design work packages through concept, preliminary and detailed design stages, as well as execution support. The Principal Designer will report directly to the CS&A Responsible Engineer.

Candidate Requirements

  • Ideally hold Nuclear SC Clearance or be eligible to obtain it.
  • HNC qualification (or equivalent).
  • 5+ years’ experience in a Designer role.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated and quality‑assured environment where engineering formed a major part of the role.
  • Solution‑focused mindset.
  • Ability to work proactively as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering design team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create Civil & Structural engineering drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to meet project requirements.
  • Review project files for compliance with standards and protocols.
  • Implement engineering best practices and procedures.
  • Support the delivery of high‑quality engineering design solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Appropriate qualifications in Civil or Structural Engineering, e.g. HND, HNC.
  • Experience of working on projects delivering multidisciplinary design solutions, predominantly on brownfield sites and asset care.
  • Understanding of project delivery across all design stages (concept, front‑end design through to project close‑out).
  • Ability to support other Designers within the CS&A Design team.
  • Knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes for reinforced concrete, steel and masonry.
  • Sound working knowledge and experience of relevant legislation.
  • Experience operating within highly regulated environments such as Nuclear, Rail, Bridge Construction, Offshore, Petrochemical, etc.
  • Extensive AutoCAD, Revit and/or Civil 3D experience.
  • Experience delivering projects to challenging deadlines, adopting a pragmatic and flexible approach.
  • Excellent detailing skills.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear industry/SL standards and the ability to translate requirements into AutoCAD drawings.
  • Familiarity with SL/Axiom processes and Document Management Systems.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using Revit for steel‑framed structures, building alterations and refurbishment projects.
  • Knowledge of the Sellafield Enterprise Management System (SEMS).
  • Experience in civil/structural safety design.
  • Experience working within Joint Venture integrated design teams.
  • Experience being seconded into Client integrated design teams.
  • SQEP for SR0754 Designer.
  • Monitored Worker status.
