Job Description:

Senior Structural Design Engineer – Steel Specialist

Location: South Yorkshire

Salary: Competitive (Dependent on Experience) + Comprehensive Benefits Package

Position: Full-Time, Permanent

The Company

Our client is a well-established, highly respected structural steel specialist with a reputation for engineering excellence across the UK and Europe. From straightforward building frames to iconic, complex, large-scale structural masterpieces, they possess the in-house capabilities to design, fabricate, and erect steelwork that shapes modern skylines.

Due to a thriving project pipeline, they are now seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join their forward-thinking engineering team in South Yorkshire.

The Role

As a Senior Structural Design Engineer, you will take ownership of the front-end engineering design process. This is a high-autonomy, high-impact role where you will design, analyse, and deliver safe, efficient, and compliant structural solutions for a highly varied portfolio of projects.

You will act as a key technical authority—collaborating closely with internal drawing offices, clients, architects, and main contractors to turn architectural visions into buildable steel realities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Structural Engineering: Produce comprehensive structural designs, load path analyses, and structural calculations for diverse steelwork projects.
  • Connection Design: Develop, refine, and verify connection designs to ensure optimum structural integrity and fabrication efficiency.
  • Technical Software Mastery: Utilise industry-standard design suites (including Tekla Structural Designer, Masterframe, STAAD Pro, or similar) to simulate load paths and structural behaviour.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, providing technical clarity and project progress updates to clients and senior management.
  • Tender & Compliance: Assist with technical documentation for tender submissions while ensuring all designs meet Eurocodes, British Standards, and Health & Safety regulations.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Industry Pedigree: Extensive, proven experience working within a structural design engineering capacity, specifically focused on structural steelwork.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on mastery of design software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Masterframe, Fastrak Portal Frame, or STAAD Pro.
  • Connection Expertise: Strong capability in connection design (experience with Masterseries Connections or Tedds is highly advantageous).
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills with the confidence to advise architects, challenge structural concepts, and present to clients.
  • Qualifications: A degree or HNC/HND in Structural or Civil Engineering (Chartered or working towards Chartership is a plus, though proven sector experience is highly valued).

What’s on Offer?

  • Exposure to a diverse, prestigious, and technically challenging project portfolio.
  • Real long-term career development within an expanding, financially secure organisation.
  • A supportive, collaborative engineering environment with a focus on professional growth.
  • Competitive salary, pension scheme, and excellent company benefits.
