Senior Substation Secondary (P&C) Design Engineer

Locations: Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds, or Glasgow (Hybrid: Minimum 3 days a week in-office/client site)

Sector: Power & Energy Solutions / Engineering Consultancy

Core Clients: National Grid, SSEN Transmission, and major international utility networks

Are you an experienced electrical engineer with a deep understanding of Protection & Control systems? Ready to step into a senior technical leadership role that directly shapes the UK’s transition to Net Zero?

We are looking for a Senior P&C Design Engineer to join a world-class engineering consultancy. In this role, you will lead multi-disciplinary project teams, driving substation design from Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) through to Detailed Design for major transmission and distribution networks.

The Role

As a senior figure within our Electrical Engineering division, you will bridge the gap between complex technical delivery and strategic client relationships. You will provide technical governance on high-profile grid projects, ensure design quality, and mentor the next generation of engineering talent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Lead and quality-assure FEED and Detailed Design workstreams for core clients like National Grid and SSEN Transmission.
  • P&C Specialism: Review and sign off on complex protection schemes, CT/VT sizing, relay configuration philosophies, single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring diagrams, and I/O schedules.
  • System Architecture: Oversee substation automation architectures, control room layouts, marshalling cabinets, and protection panels.
  • Project & Tender Management: Manage tender packages, answer technical queries, develop competitive technical offers, and coordinate with back-office teams, sub-contractors, and equipment suppliers (relay manufacturers, SAS vendors, and SCADA integrators).
  • Safety & Governance: Chair crucial Design Review and Hazard Review meetings, attend site visits, and ensure flawless technical governance across all deliverables.
  • Team Development: Manage resourcing, build team capabilities, and mentor junior engineers on their pathway to Chartership.

About You

You are a collaborative, curious engineer who thrives in a fast-paced consultancy environment. You excel at building trust with clients, translating complex grid challenges into successful workstreams, and championing an inclusive team culture.

Your Experience & Qualifications

  • Academic Foundation: Minimum 2:2 BEng in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Renewable Energy, or a closely related discipline.
  • P&C Expertise: Proven experience in Electrical Engineering with a dedicated focus on Protection & Control (P&C) design. Experience up to 400kV is highly desirable but not essential.
  • Consultative & Commercial Skill: A track record of managing tender packages, producing high-quality technical offers, and interfacing directly with major network clients.
  • Accreditation: Achievement of or a clear motivation toward professional accreditation (CEng), supported by our structured corporate development program.
  • Work Style: Comfortable with agile working practices and committed to spending a minimum of three days a week in the office or on client sites to foster team collaboration.

What We Offer

  • Impactful Projects: High-visibility work at the forefront of grid modernization, decarbonization, and renewable energy integration.
  • Professional Progression: Extensive personal development, tailored training, and full financial/mentor support toward achieving your Chartership.
  • Collaborative Culture: A supportive, hybrid environment that values the power of in-person collaboration to accelerate your learning and career development.
