As a Senior or Associate Principal Engineer in our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation business, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation. We work on a diverse range of significant and challenging projects across the UK and Ireland, including Midlands Rail Hub, East West Rail, Lower Thames Crossing and a variety of National Highways schemes, as well as non‑transportation civil engineering and structures projects such as the Water Market or Nuclear schemes, and local authority projects in the Midlands.

Role

  • Develop high‑quality civil and structural designs for new constructions, renewals, maintenance and assessments, with an emphasis on bridge design and railway civil engineering.
  • Collaborate with national and international design teams, using expertise and leadership to create positive, sustainable impacts on society and the environment.
  • Manage the production and review of high‑quality design documentation, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.
  • Independently carry out technical work and provide guidance to junior staff.
  • Lead teams in the design, assessment and maintenance of structural or railway civil engineering projects, and provide structure‑related input on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverables.
  • Use analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and use engineering judgement to appraise options and recommend the most suitable one.
  • Lead bids and tenders, win work and develop client relationships.

About You

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional qualification (CEng/IEng) and membership of the ICE or IStructE.
  • Experience working with key clients such as Network Rail, National Highways or local authorities as well as major contractors and developers.
  • Good understanding of relevant design standards (Eurocodes, DMRB, MCHW and Network Rail standards).
  • Practical knowledge and experience of bridge design, maintenance, assessment or railway civil engineering and stations projects.
  • Experience with structural analysis software packages such as LUSAS, MIDAS and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design; also interested in ABAQUS, ANSYS or NASTRAN.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of clients, stakeholders and colleagues across disciplines.
  • Good project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across contract types, including managing stakeholders such as specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities.
  • Knowledge of AI or programming skills appreciated.
