Duty Manager – Glasgow Youth Hostel

Glasgow Youth Hostel, 7/8 Park Terrace, Glasgow, G3 6BY.
Permanent contract; start date 15th June 2026. 37.5 hours per week.
This is a live‑out position. The role is not for the faint‑hearted; an adventurous spirit is essential. Hostelling Scotland is a non‑profit charity that helps guests of all ages and backgrounds discover and experience Scotland. As a Duty Manager, you will act as an ambassador for Scotland and make a difference to every visitor, ensuring top quality service and wonderful experiences.
Responsibilities
As Duty Manager, use your leadership and team‑building skills to ensure that your team works together to exceed guest expectations and produce amazing reviews.
- Manage your team under the leadership of the Hostel/Group Manager, adopting a hands‑on approach and actively participating in day‑to‑day routines such as reception, housekeeping, bed making, laundry, etc., as required.
- Ensure Fire and Legionella procedures are adhered to and manage banking duties.
- Maintain physical fitness due to many stairs in the hostel.
- Continue reviewing hostel services, managing bookings and proposing ways to increase revenue.
- Provide or obtain the appropriate food safety and personal licence training (training will be provided as part of induction).
Requirements
- Evidence of working at duty manager level in hospitality or a similar environment.
- Previous experience catering for large groups in a busy contract catering environment.
- Excellent knowledge of food hygiene, HACCP, COSHH regulations and a relevant catering qualification (e.g., Elementary Food Hygiene certificate, SVQ/NVQ in catering, food production).
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Experience of managing budgets.
- Confidence directing contractors.
- Strong evidence of managing teams.
- Ability to build great relationships and be involved with the communities surrounding our hostels.
- A great sense of humour and a willingness to work alongside the team when needed.
- Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.
- Right to work in the UK.
- UK driver’s licence and own vehicle.
